~ Upgrade OS, to use latest browser ? ~

A random trivial office conversation in the evening related to browsers made us realise that one needs upgrade OS {if you are running Microsoft Operating System} to use Microsoft's latest browser offering i.e. IE 10.

But, MSFT offers a compatible version of IE 10 for Users who aren't on Windows 8 ;)

Guess what, it is the same with Apple too. Safari 6 comes integrated with OSX Mountain Lion. One cannot download Safari 6 for previous versions of OSX.

Isn't that just BIZARRE? One needs to upgrade their Operatin System {OS} to use latest browser release. What could be the possible reasons:
  1. Consumers are forced to upgrade to latest OS; which brings in more money for them
  2. They don't want to invest time & resources to support the latest features for older browsers versions

However, other popular browsers - Chrome, Firefox, Opera - do not have such limitations.

~ Wearable technology ~

"To convince people that they have to wear something, it has to be incredible," Cook said. "If we asked a room of 20-year olds to stand up if they're wearing a watch, I don't think anyone would stand up."

If The Verge is to be believed then that above observation from Tim Cook, makes him a realist. Many of us don't wear watch these days unless for fashion statement. I wear them occasionally. Not sure if  Cook made such a statement to stop the trail leading to Apple's next wearable tech gadget, which could very well be a smart-watch.

However, Tim Cook feels that the market for wearable computing is "interesting & profound" which is ripe for exploration by many companies. When asked about Google Glasses, here is what he had to say

"It’s probably not likely to be a mass market item. It’s probably more likely to appeal to certain markets,” Cook said. I'm interested in a great product. I wear glasses because I have to. People generally want glasses to reflect their fashion, style, etc. So this is difficult from a mainstream point of view. I think the wrist is natural. I think there are other things in this space that could be interesting. Sensors are exploding. It will become clearer over time.
I feel that with ever expanding world of technology & manufacturing we are just churning out more smart devices for the same purpose - mobility & function. Lot of smart devices which are already in the market - Smartphone, Music Player, Tablet, Laptop - overlap the feature set over form factor. I have a music player, smartphone & macbook. The most I use during my day would be - Smartphone, Macbook, Musicplayer - in the order which is mentioned, when it comes to mobility. The pattern would resonate with most who own more than one mobile device. I feel people would prefer owing one unified device {carry/wear} over many devices for same feature set.

There are already many next gen devices out there & also talking shoes, which is beginning to shape the ground for the next big thing - Bionic Technology - for the masses.

If you think Bionic technology is in nascent stage then you should watch this video to open your mind ;)

~ The bike maker ~

Made by hand have published their 5th short film. This time it is about bike maker Ezra Caldwell (Fast Boy Cycles), who was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. When the cancer threatens to shatter his love of bikes, Ezra survives by documenting his illness as thoroughly as his craft.

Here are some of the bikes which I loved from his collection.

~ Justice is mirage ~

After watching this interview of Chitra Subramaniam by Madhu Trehan, feel that in India all political parties have played their dirty role & no one wants to get to the bottom of the Bofors scam. There have been 3 different Political parties who have formed Government at the Central apart from Congress, since the BoforsGate. We have never seen Iron will from even one Govt to go after the guilty & corrupt and deliver justice.

Another observation is the fact, which both discuss during the start of the interview. Back in time there wasn't jealousy among the peers, when a journalist broke something significant. However, now we some of the hard talking journos who collude with the political parties for their own gain. Even though Chitra Subramaniam broke the news of Bofors in her early days of her career & she still has her feet grounded.

In contrast with the BoforsGate, the IPL SpotFixing scandal is minuscule. Do you think we will see any justice being delivered in India for crimes where politicians are involved cutting across party lines?

~ IPL: A premier reality show ~

IPL is the new reality show. Where thousands pay to catch live action & while millions watch the entertainment at homes or restaurants via the pay-to-view channel. The initial entertainment cast included Players, Owners & honorary members of the owners, Umpires, Commentators. The after-party cast includes - Models, Bollywood Actors, Celebrities.  The script got bigger when the spot light was on Betting Mafia & Bookies for SpotFixing. The extended cast now include  - Boards Members, Politicians, Media Organization, Govt Organizations - Police forces from various states, ED, AAI, etc.

Could anyone have scripted a better reality show than IPL? I don't think so.

The IPL was created after a careful study of other established Sporting Leagues in the world - NBA, MLB, NFL, EPL, Champions League - by Lalit Modi, the founder and architect of the Indian Premier League and Champions League T20. He was the Confidence Man {by The Caravan}, who was ousted from his IPL throne by BCCI & the Politicians in 2010. He fled the country before the Enforcement Directorate request to cancel his passport.

Currently living in London, he seems to be baying for N Srinivasan, BCCI President's head. Wonder how Mr Modi, who is enjoying his air-time since the IPL SpotFixing broke out last week, has never been questioned by the Media about his own financial irregularities and the International detention request for Modi in the year 2010.

Post Modi-era, the IPL hasn't been trouble free either. Teams exiting the league. Change of ownership in case of Deccan Chargers to Sunrisers Hyderabad. You can read the latest post 'The sad, sorry mess that is the IPL' by Aakar Patel.
Rajasthan was fined Rs.100 crore in February. Such behaviour in IPL teams appears to be the norm. Espncricinfo reported that the enforcement directorate “has issued almost 24 show cause notices, amounting to Rs.2,000 crore, under FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) against various IPL franchises and the BCCI.”
Have you noticed one thing after the IPL spot fixing broke out. We haven't seen any debate or utterance of the word #SpotFixing during the pre/post match extravaganza hosted by the official broadcaster nor the commentators during the matches. Many of the esteemed players like Sachin or Dhoni haven't come out and spoken to the media. One of the simplest analogy offered is that, since their teams haven't been involved why or what is the necessity for them to talk about it. As always, Mr Dependable the captain of Rajasthan Royals, the Wall of Indian cricket had to face the media because players from his club have been accused & arrested in SpotFixing.

Saibal Bose has a brilliant piece - The loneliness of Rahul Dravid.
There is something tragic about Rahul Dravid. He makes a brilliant Test debut, but is upstaged by Sourav Ganguly. He plays brilliantly in the World Cup at Taunton, but once again Ganguly hogs the limelight. He is one half of a remarkable partnership at the Eden Gardens against Australia, but it is VVS Laxman who is the 'better' half. He is on the verge of completing a satisfying season as Rajasthan Royals captain, when a spot-fixing scandal blows up in his face.
After the SpotFixing and the arrests of Players, Bookies, Actors & the latest scalp - Former Team Principal of Chennai Super Kings. The noose is tightening for Srini Mama to step down as BCCI President. It's more than just 3 rotten eggs Mr BCCI President, now that your Son-in-law has also been arrested in the SpotFixing saga. Mr Rajeev Shukla also needs to be held accountable for the mess that has occurred.

As Mike Marqusee, from The Guardian, writes in his 2010 post titled 'IPL's dark side of neoliberal dream'. One might say the post is biased by an Englishman. I feel it offers a realistic picture as to whom the IPL was invented for in the first place - existing Businessmen who are looking to maximising profits in new domain. Sporting leagues around the world is not just about promoting sports, it is a new medium of business to invest & make money.
The IPL was never, in fact, a pure effusion of free-market competition. The franchises are and will remain dependent on cricket's vast non-profit sector – for grounds and facilities, players and umpires. For foreign stars, they're dependent on international cricket. What's more, each franchise was given an exclusive right to exploit a designated market, which does not happen in the English Premier League. With its team salary cap, local quotas and annual player auction, the IPL provides a heavily protected environment for the franchises, in some ways more like Major League Baseball than Premier League football. The IPL is a cartel: a group of supposedly independent private interests colluding to control and carve up a market.
Whatever the undoubted virtues of the cricket played in the IPL, the culture of the IPL was soulless and contrived. The TV commentary was gushing and sometimes risibly hyperbolic, more concerned with promoting the tournament than explaining the action. Commentators displayed amazing chutzpah in reinventing cricket's venerable nomenclature: sorry, it's not a "DLF maximum" it's a six.
As with all the Scams & Scandals that are occur in India. Once the finals are played tomorrow, a winner will be announced and everyone shall go silent on the whole mega-saga. At the most, couple of heads might roll - IPL Chairman & BCCI President. The IPL6 controversies shall be buried deep in Indian Cricketing history. We the people will move one with our daily chores & return to normalcy. Even the TRP hungry media will look for a new story in the election year ahead.

We might never get to hear the truth or see the actual guilty {apart from the chicken feed bookies & 3 players} punished. Another season shall come in 2014 under a new IPL Chairman & BCCI President with a different script. Till then enjoy the circus of reality shows.

Update

Ashish Magotra raises some valid points in his latest post 'IPL spot-fixing: The ‘sourced’ truth may not be real' - on how the media covers the fixing & how well our police force carry out investigation which ultimately lets the big fishes go scot free.

~ Android & OEMs ~

Is HTC suffering from the onslaught of cheap Android phones? Are Android OEMs having the same fate to that of PC OEMs? Yes for both the questions.

Two recent articles which highlight the problems HTC is facing - The Verge
The Verge has learned that HTC's Chief Product Officer, Kouji Kodera, left the company last week. Kodera was responsible for HTC's overall product strategy, which makes the departure especially notable on the heels of the global launch of the make-or-break One.
It's not just Kodera. In the past three-odd months, HTC has lost a number of employees in rapid succession — most recently Jason Gordon, the company's vice president of global communications. Other fresh departures include global retail marketing manager Rebecca Rowland, director of digital marketing John Starkweather, and product strategy manager Eric Lin.
While Om Malik writes about how both, Apple & Samung have the upper hand in integrating Supply Chain in the manufacturing process.
Apple has used all the billions in the bank to lock up supplies for processors, memory chips, radios, displays and other such components at favorable prices. It has worked out long term manufacturing arrangements with the likes of Foxconn. It has its own retail outlets. While most of us try and focus on Apple’s hardware and software integration, we forget that it is software, hardware and supply chain integration that allows the company to sell 37.5 million phones in the most recent quarter. It allows the company to make phones that meet the needs of different carriers.
Samsung too is an integration beast. It owns memory chip plants. It makes its own processors. It makes displays and it owns the factories. It has the unique ability to churn out new products faster than anyone else in the consumer electronics business and thus overwhelm the market with dozens of models. Just look at the many flavors on its latest Samsung S4 device and you start to see that this is a game only for big boys.
Supply Chain Integration could be a very key factor for a Global player. However in India, which is one of the fastest growing smartphone market, has seen the rise of 2 companies - Karbon & Micromax - that offer low lost Android Smartphones. Micromax sources China for their production, like any other OEM to reduce production costs. The product features & functionality match that of Samsung. The exterior build quality looks same in both cases, PLASTICY. One can own a Micromax phone with S2 features for about 15000 INR which is 30% lesser compared to Samsung's device. The devices offered by Mircomax/Karbon might be cheap imitations of the South Korean giant, but they are selling like hot cakes in India.

If Samsung wants to retain it's growth & share in the Indian Android market then it needs to take cognizance of these companies & have a strategy. While Apple has always been late in introducing products in the Indian market. Micromax has outpaced & outsold both Apple & Samsung which is gearing up to touch the $1 Billion mark.

~ St Totteringham's Day ~

ArsenalFC beat NewcastleFC to finish among the top 4 in the EPL. As Gooners we aren't happy just finishing top 4 & qualifying 16th time for the Champions League. We want the team to win trophies & silence those the babies of the Million £££ Clubs who love taunting Gooners, offline & online.

We have played very well in the last 45 days of the season winning 8 of the last 10 games.
Reaching the Champions League ahead of Spurs completed a superb turnaround after they trailed by seven points at the beginning of March. Arsenal have now finished above Spurs 18 seasons in a row.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and his team saluted their joyous supporters, who sung "are you watching, Tottenham?" with added fervour. You can read more here.
The goal from Laurent Koscielny in the second half gave us the victory against Magpies.

The celebrations at the bench on the final whistle speaks for itself for Arsenè Wenger & the players.

Good to see a happy locker room. The Gunners deserved the 4th place finish. It's time now Arsenal Board & Wenger add some valuable assets for the next season.

For all you Sp*ds or BaleFC fans, even though this has been your best season in EPL, it ain't good enough to finish above us. The infographic below should remind the reality. Mind the gap & Happy St. Totteringhams Day. For the un-initiated - "St Totteringham's Day is the day when Arsenal fans celebrate the fact that Tottenham can no longer catch Arsenal in the League. It is a movable feast, but usually falls in March, April or May. It is the day to collect on bets made by over-optimistic Spurs fans in the close season who think that "this is the year". ~ No water ~

A month ago there was an article on FirstPost which became the talking point for many at my workplace. Eventually, I wrote a lengthy post on the same subject which I had been following for more than 5 years. H2O is an essential entity for sustenance of all the living species - flora & fauna.

~ View on instagram ~

From then to now, the Summer hasn't been that hot in Bangalore. However, the place I live in hasn't had water supply for 5 days now. For the first time, I have seen water tankers ferrying water to homes in the neighbourhood. Unlike the New Bangalore or Greater Bangalore areas which do not have water supply from BWSSB & depend on private water supply. Sourcing water from private operator isn't common around this part of town, where we are used to constant flow of Cauvery water for the past 25+ years. The situation is alarming and should be cause of concern for all of us who are living in the city.

Sample some of the news from TOI this week,
The storage as on Wednesday will ensure that taps in Bangalore and Mysore don't go dry for 8-10 days, sources told The Times of India. If by then there's no rain, the situation could turn grim. Reason: There are no preparations made to use water classified as 'dead storage' in irrigation parlance. "We can use that water. But we require heavy duty pumps to get the water to flow out. These are made-to-order pumps and require at least 45 days to put the infrastructure in place. No homework has been done on this front, and now, there's no time," sources explained.
According to the above source both the cities, Mysore & Bangalore, are at risk.

The crisis, in fact, is already on the doorsteps of Mysore city. The pumping station at Hongahalli remained switched off till Tuesday. The Hongahalli pumping station, which draws water for Mysore, cannot draw water from the KRS, as the storage level remained as low as 39 inches, Venkatraju revealed. He said only further release of water from Hemavathy can get this pumping station resume.
The only source of water for Bangalore city other than the Cauvery river, the Tippagondanahalli (TG Halli) reservoir too is in no state to come to the city's rescue. Though moderate pre-monsoon showers are pushing up water level in Tippagondanahalli (TG Halli) dam up to 11 feet, due to rapid evaporation water level is receding to five feet, making any pumping of water impossible. BWSSB stopped drawing water from TG since November. More here
If the ground reality at the dams are that bad. Not sure what plans does our newly elected Chief Minister have up his sleeve to solve {or avert} water crisis.

One cannot have a quick-fix solution for such a problem. There needs to be planning, co-ordination & execution from various departments. Am not aware if we have any such Department or Ministry related to Town / City / Urban planning that does any work for holistic growth of our city. Bangalore has expanded very rapidly in the last 8 years & continues to do. When BWSSB can't plan & provide water for the existing areas under their jurisdiction. It shall only remain a distinct dream for all those new townships and gated communities that are mushrooming around the Old Bangalore.

We may not have war between Mysore & Bangalore in the coming weeks. But those of you investing Crores of rupees in properties, do check if you will have sufficient water in the years to come.

Also, conservation of water doesn't happen over a festival or an IPL tournament. One gotta save every drop everyday. Good Night!

~ Leopards: 21st Century Cats ~

The special episode from BBC Natural World provides an insight into how the Leopards & humans are living together in cities & rural areas. Rom Whitaker takes you through various parts of India highlighting the differences in each region related to how Humans live & respond to the Leopards.

After you have seen the documentary one can conclude that in the ever expanding human settlement the Leopards have adapted their lifestyles with the changes to the environment. We Humans have encroached natural habitats & caused major damage to the wild-life and the eco-system.

We are equally responsible for turn the Leopards into man-eaters. Guess what, Mumbai has the highest Leopard presence compared to any other Urban Metropolis on Earth. That's interesting isn't it :)

~ One Camera. One Lens ~

I have been shooting with D7000 DSLR from Aug 2011 with one lens { 18-200mm }. Today, was watching the latest episode from DRTV & their task of visiting 10 locations in 2 days across London.

Kai has some interesting advice & I feel thats a very good experiment which a photographer should try at some point of time. Transcribed the following from the video ;)

"Travel around with just the bare essentials. It has made one realise that one doesn't need much more than your basic gear. But more importantly choice is what suits you. The best gear is something which rely on & also which makes your shooting comfortable and convenient.
Try it next time when you go on a trip. Just pick one camera & one lens, you might enjoy working to get that shot rather than working to carry that gear."

~ End of Fergie Era ~

Image: BBC

Like many other, Fergie era has come to an end in the year 2013. Even though I dislike MUFC, have a lot of respect Sir Alex for what he has achieved for the club & EPL in general. Don't think there will be another manager of this caliber to rule MUFC or another English club in a long time. Not to discredit from Mr Professor

It would be interesting to see who will be appointed as Manager @ MUFC & also how would MUFC perform without Fergie. Will there be void due to Fergie's departure? Only time shall tell.

Am very sure that Fergie will still be part of MUFC as a Director or something more significant. Hope SAF recovers from his hip surgery, which he is slated to undergo soon. Wish him luck &  life.

Am happy that we won't be having Fergie Time anymore in EPL ;)

~ Be kind ~

With so much of chaos & negativity in the environment we live, it is tough to remain positive. Also, it is very easy to err or blame others or expect others to do something for you. The big Qs are

  • What have you done for those around?
  • How have you been different to bring the change which you wish to see?

If each one of us can ask those Qs & do something about it then we definitely can bring about change in our lifetime. First step could be being kind to fellow homo sapiens, other species & environment.

Hope fellow Bangaloreans learn something from the video & show some respect while riding or driving.

~ Offline Paul ~

Also known as Paul Miller. Mr Paul embarked on a year long journey to be disconnected from the digital world. It would be hard for a person like him to go offline for 12 months without internet.
I'd used the internet constantly since I was twelve, and as my livelihood since I was fourteen. I'd gone from paperboy, to web designer, to technology writer in under a decade.
In Information age, it is quite hard & takes a lot of effort to stay in-sync with rest of the world without Internet. At least to those of us who are constantly consuming endless data from various streams. My parents on the other hand  contradict me, they don't use or need internet for any of their daily chores. However, I do require it for my profession. Outside of work it is more or less for social communication, reading, consuming news, occasional shopping, watching videos & nothing beyond.

Here are some of the thoughts which I liked from Paul's first post after coming online - I’m still here: back online after a year without the internet

"Internet is reprogramming our relationships, our emotions, and our sensitivity," said one of the rabbis at the rally. It destroys our patience. It turns kids into "click vegetables."
As my head uncluttered, my attention span expanded.
By pulling away from the echo chamber of internet culture, I found my ideas branching out in new directions.
It turns out paper books are really great. I don't comparison shop to buy plane tickets, I just call Delta and take what they offer.
In fact, most things I was learning could be realized with or without an internet connection — you don't need to go on a yearlong internet fast to realize your sister has feelings.
The moral choices aren't very different without the internet.
There's a lot of "reality" in the virtual, and a lot of "virtual" in our reality - Nathan Jurgenson
What I do know is that I can't blame the internet, or any circumstance, for my problems.
The longest I have remained offline in the last 3 years, the farthest my memory can be stretched, is about 3 days ;) How long have you remained offline?

Here is an interesting poster which I came across recently.

~ News is entertainment ~

Post the Doordarshan era when the Govt of India allowed private players to broadcast, we initially had a bouquet of sports & entertainment channels. As far as the News channels were concerned, back in late 90s we had - DD, Zee News & Aaj Tak. The alternative source of news were magazines - The Outlook, The Week, India Today & regional cousins - and traditional Newspapers.

Step into 21st Century, we have 120 News channels operating across India. Of these 120 channels, guess about 5 English channels are watched by most urban population, discounting the Regional news channels.

Thanks to these channels, am disillusioned by how information is feed to us & at times they have constant supply of *Breaking News*. Thanks to FDI &  politicians / political parties who want a medium to reach out to the masses, we now have many of them who own or control some of these channels. Most of these channels are biased towards a specific party, religion or an issue. Very rarely do we see these channels take a neutral stance &  get the bottom of an issue.

After the Radiagate exposè, I lost faith with some of the main stream media professionals {& their organizations} whose names have appeared in the deal making. I feel the role of media today has changed to that of a *Middleman* who brokers deals between different political parties, business men, corporations than their primary objective of delivery quality information to the people of the current affairs. My view holds good w.r.t Indian media only.

I have been watching Madhu Trehan's episodes today morning & agree with her points. Wonder how those anchoring the shows fail to miss the obvious. I wish those Media professionals watch Madhu's show & take it as feedback about their work & bring some change. Have been following the alternative media - bloggers or websites - which cover/offers another perspective to the main stream media. Some of them which I frequently visit are:
Open The Magazine
The Caravan
Kafila
Churmuri
Media Crooks
News Laundry
Faking News *Satire

Move over bloggers or websites, we now have  realtime crowd-sourced news being covered by people across the globe powered by Twitter. Any major event {Political | Sporting | Festival | Product Launches} or Catastrophe being delivered instantaneously with videos & pictures. This breaks the hold of mainstream media on coverage of events. The below pictures were taken by Andrew Kitzenberg, in the night when Tsarnaev brothers had a show down with police.

Here it’s clear to see the brothers taking aim and firing on the officers. (Taken at 12:47:57AM)

This is a zoomed in view from the last image. The red circle highlights the pressure cooker bomb that was used just moments after this photo was taken. These are the only pictures which I have come across on the internet captured by Andrew. For first hand account of the event witnessed by Andrew visit here

However, the normal public do not have access to information when it comes to Govts or Corporations. That's where we bank on the these Media Corps to deliver news AS IS versus interpreting or transforming before reaching us.

We have hacktivist style of news reporting from YourAnonNews & WikiLeaks. Even though their means of obtaining information is not considered ethical by majority their intent isn't *always* wrong. From the recent Boston bombings, we have seen online vigilantism which caused a lot of rumour & chaos in the already stressed environment. This is one of the major drawbacks of digital world when data is available for everyone to piece together & offer their own versions.

One of the politicians I admire is Mr Obama. How I wish our PM Mr Manmohan Singh shared some wit or at least spoke, at times, when it mattered. Enjoy this talk, Obama taking digs at the entire media during his speech at the White House Correspondent’s dinner.

Update 13 May 2013

Anubha Bhonsle has a very good write up on how Twitter plays a role in how we consume news & also the responsibility of the journalists to get their basics right & provide meaningful context to the raw data. Do read 'News in the time of Twitter' on News Laundry.

There is no denying that social media platforms can today spread information and misinformation far quicker than they would have spread a decade ago. The problem though isn’t with technology. The problem is many of us have all but abandoned standards of good reporting, the very basics. The need of the hour is a reporter who will shape a narrative in a cacophony of noise, conversation and abundant content around him/her or on the social web. A reporter who will dig, question, unearth and make the linkages.
Biz Stone, the co-founder of Twitter has been quoted as saying, “We provide the information. That’s when we hand off the baton to journalists, to provide context.”
